Week 2 Recap
Boys …..With two weeks of races in the books, the
nationally-ranked Russellville Cyclones are off and running. Running without Chase Feltner, the
Cyclones took a close win over the Conway Wampus Cats, 49-54, at the
UALR Open (Hendrix College, Conway, 9/7/2002).
The Cyclones had a troubling spread of 2:47 to hold off Conway
who posted a respectable 1:19 spread.
The following week at the Zero Mountain Races (Ft. Smith, 9/14/2002), Chase
Feltner made his 2002 debut and led the Cyclones to an easy 23-47
win in a nine-team race over Tulsa Bishop Kelley. Russellville cut the five-man spread
to a more reasonable 1:46.
Other Boys results…….Lake
Hamilton finished 3rd at UALR with an average 5-man time of 18:26
over 5K with a spread of 1:52. The
following week at OBU, Burt Hicks led the Wolves to a 52-52 tie with Conway as
the team average dropped to a much improved 17:28 with a 1:57 spread. Meanwhile Conway improved from an average
18:26 (1:19 spread) at UALR to 17:35 with an outstanding 54 second spread at
OBU. Rogers claimed their 11th
win in the past 12 years at the Carthage Invitational (held at Missouri
Southern in Joplin) on 9/12/2002 led by sophomore Luis Flores who finished 4th. The Mounties returned to the Show Me State
on 9/17/2002 to take another win at the Monett Invitational with a 1:33 spread.
Fayetteville opened their season at the
Zero Mountain Races (9/14/2002) with a 3rd place finish but placing
their Top 5 all within one minute of leader J. T. Reinert who was 4th.
Mt. Home took honors at the Berryville Bobcat Invitational (9/14/2002) with a 5-man spread from 16;59-18:2, a
repectable 1:22. The Bombers placed five
in the Top 11 to take Springdale 27-64 in the eight-team meet. Hot Springs was the leading Class 4A team at the
UALR Open posting a 5th place team finish and an overall average time
of 19:33 (spread of 2:53). The Trojans
were 4th at OBU with an average of 18:46 and a much improved spread
of 1:50. Heber Springs led 3A teams at the
UALR Open with a 7th place overall team finish and a 5-man average of
19:45 and followed that up with a 6th place overall at OBU while
averaging 19:09. Little Rock Lutheran led
2A schools at UALR with an average of 19:57 good enough for a 9th place
finish and captured 9th again at OBU with a 19:19 average.
Girls …In Girls action, the Bryant Lady Hornets
set the opening pace at the UALR Open (9/7/2002) with a solid 51-68 win over Lake
Hamilton in a 13-team race. Bryant
overcame Lake Hamilton’s 2-3 finish with a solid 1:21 spread. The same two teams squared off again the
following week at the Ouachita Baptist University Invitational (Arkadelphia,
9/14/2002) with similar results except that Tennessee power Houston High
School came out with a strong 35-67-89 win. Houston placed their Top 5 in the first eleven finishers
with a terrific 44 second spread over the 2.5 mile course. Houston averaged a swift 15:30 for
their Top 5 while Bryant clocked a nice 15:55 with Lake Hamilton
at 16:20 but with a dangerous 3:20 spread.
Other Girls
results….Mount St. Mary’s took 3rd at UALR behind Ashley Williams
and averaged 17:46 although the spread was 3:46 due to William’s swift
clocking. MSM came back at OBU to take 4th with an average of 16:17
and an improved spread of 2:53. The
Lady Mounties from Rogers took two wins at the Carthage Invite on 9/12/2002 and
at Monett on 9/17/2002 behind team leader, junior Andrea Peerson. Mt.
Home opened with a close 64-69 win at Berryville on 9/14/2002 over Springdale
led by Laura Broderdorf’s win. Fayetteville opened at the Zero Mountain Races
on 9/14/2002 with a 2nd place finish behind Tulsa Bishop Kelley,
34-44, over the 2.1 mile course. Vilonia led Class 4A teams at UALR with a 7th place finish and an average of
20:09 (spread of 3:27) while taking 5th at OBU (average of 17:40 and
spread of 3:09). Heber Springs claimed
10th at UALR to lead 3A teams while averaging 22:53. At OBU, Heber dropped
to 14th in an improved field and dropped their average to 20:47 (spread of 2:38). However, Pulaski Academy, DeQueen and Magnet
Cove took 7th through 9th at OBU averaging 17:47, 18:10
and 18:21, respectively. Little Rock
Lutheran took 8th at UALR (average 20:22) while garnering 11th
at OBU with an average of 20:07. Acorn
took 9th at OBU with an average of 19:40 to lead 2A schools.
STARS OF THE
WEEK:
GIRLS --- Sophomore Ashley Williams of Little Rock
Mount St. Mary’s has set the bar high with two impressive wins. At the UALR
Open (9/7/2002), Williams finished the 4K course in 14:58.71 and showed the
following week that this was no fluke as she raced to a win at the OBU Invite
(9/14/2002) over 2.5 miles in a sizzling 14:27.64.
Lake Hamilton’s
Beth Madson (junior), last spring’s 3200m winner at the Meet of Champs, posted
two very good times of 15:36.87 at UALR and 14:53.63 at OBU.
Houston High
School (TN) turned in a very strong team effort with each of their Top 5 under
16:00 over 2.5 miles….Caroline Peyton in 15:09.73, Rachel Anderson in 15:12.41,
Kimberly McVeigh at 15:30.90, Jordan Kaltwasser at 15:43.23 and Sarah Olsen at
15:53.67.

Mountain Races in 13:16 for 2.1 miles. This equates to about a 12:40 for 3200m.
Andrea Peerson of Rogers took 4th at Carthage with a 20:17 over 5K.
BOYS --- Chase Feltner of Russellville cruised to an
easy 5K win in 15:42 over brother Travis in 16:14 at the Zero Mountain Races in
Ft. Smith on 9/14/2002. Travis had
taken the win at the UALR Open (9/7/2002) with a 16:12 over 5K.
