ARKANSAS ROUND-UP
Arkansas Track Coaches Association All-Comers Meet
February 22, 2003
Randal Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas
Fayetteville, Arkansas
What happens when hundreds of athletes from Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas gather for a Saturday of indoor track? Taking advantage of the outstanding facilities at the Randal Tyson Track Center, the athletes posted over 1200 performances, several national level marks, dozens of performances qualifying for inclusion in the Arkansas All-Time Best Listings and undoubtedly numerous school records and PRs.
Scott Martin (Jenks, OK) provided one of the meet highlights with a superb 16’ 3” pole vault while Katya Kostetskaya (Jonesboro, AR) smashed her own Arkansas All-Time Best for the 800m with a 2:09.04 clocking. Kosteskaya ran 2:13.24 in the 2002 Nike Indoor Classic to top the charts last year. Jay Cooper (Jenks, OK) sprinted to an impressive early season 21.95 in the 200m.
Lakeisha Martin (Pine Bluff, AR) was a triple winner with a 17’ 5” LJ, a 7.33 in the 55m dash and a 26.28 in the 200m. Wallace Spearmon (Fayetteville, AR) was a double winner with 23’ 5” in the LJ and a 44’ 9” for the TJ. Spearmon also took 2nd in the 200m at 22.320and 6th in the 55m dash at 6.59. Jason Coleman (Watonga, OK) pulled an impressive double by winning the 1600m in 4:18.80 and doubling back in 1:55.53 for the 800m win.
Brittany Leftwich (Greenwood, AR) leaped 35’ 4/75” to set a new Arkansas All-Time Best in the TJ. The previous best was 34’ 4” by LaTesha Anderson of Nashville in 1999.
Paige Farrell (Springdale, AR) won the 400m in a strong 57.07 and double backed for 2nd in the 800m at 2:19.23. Rachel Barber (Jenks, OK) ran a swift 5:08.57 to win the 1600m.
Overall there were 183 performances qualifying for the All-Time Best Listings. The Arkansas Boys set 93 new listings in four events while the Girls were close behind with 90 new listings in seven events. Kostetskaya and Leftwich were the only two athletes to set new overall bests.
Fanstasy Results. Had the meet been scored as an Arkansas vs. Oklahoma competition using a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 point scale, the Natural State would have taken a double win over the Sooner State with the Boys winning 311-235 and the Girls by 338-208. Oklahoma’s strength in the distances were not enough o offset the Arkansas strength in the sprints and field events.
Taking only the Arkansas schools and scoring with a 10-8-6-4-2-1 point scale gives the following Top 10:
