ARKANSAS ROUND-UP
Arkansas Outdoor Track and Field Meets Recap Weeks 9-10
June 2, 2003
Another fun year of high school track and field came to a close in Arkansas with the Meet of Champions on May 21, 2003 and the Decathlon/Heptathlon on May 28-29, 2003 with both events held at Cabot High School. The Meet of Champs features the State Meet champions in each event from each of the five classifications plus the next three best performances at the State Meets. The Dec/Hep, one of the oldest such high school events in the nation, is held over a two day period.
The Meet of Champs once again offered great competition as 201 performances met the 2003 Best Performances standards, 31 met the Arkansas All-Time Best standards and six met the 2003 DyeStat Elite standards. The Girls contributed four of the DyeStat Elite marks and a whopping 25 of the All-Time Best marks. Paige Farrell (Springdale) blazed to a new meet and overall record in the Girls 400m with a 55.88 smashing the mark set by Inetta Lee (Pine Bluff) in 1984 at 56.14. Katya Kostetskaya (Jonesboro) cruised to victory in the Girls 800m with a new meet record and overall mark of 2:06.44 easily lowering the old mark of 2:13.74 set by Holly Baskin (Shiloh Christian) in 1996. Stephanie Irwin (Mt. Ida) re-established her dominance in the Girls PV with a new meet and overall record of 12’ 0” while Jodie Mayes (Fayetteville, sophomore) was close behind at 11’ 6”. In Boys PV action Adam Rhodes (Crossett) met the DyeStat mark with a 15’ 0” vault barely slipping by Aaron Puckett (Lake Hamilton) at 14’ 10”. Isiah Rucker (Camden Fairview) tossed the iron 58’ 11” in the Boys SP for another DyeStat mark. Double winners included Courtney Brown (Sylvan Hills) winning the Girls 100m (12.33) and 200m (24.94), Katya Kostetkaya (Jonesboro) in the Girls 800m and 100m hurdles (14.84), Wallace Spearmon (Fayetteville) in the Boys 100m (10.84) and 200m (21.74), Chase Feltner (Russellville) in the Boys 1600m (4:20.94) and 3200m (9:26.95), Jerome Phillips (Crossett) in the Boys 110m hurdles (14.56) and 300m hurdles (38.73) and Isiah Rucker (Camden Fairview) in the Boys SP and Discuss (159’ 6”). Special mention goes to Ashley Williams (Mount St. Mary’s) who easily won the Girls 3200m in 11:09.29 and came up a bit short to Jessi Barnes (Bentonville) in the Girls 1600m as Barnes clocked 5:07.78 to William’s 5:10.57. Brittney Leftwich (Greenwood) won an exciting race in the Girls 300m hurdles with a close 46.26-46.28 win over Sadrina Shaw (Sylvan Hills) and took 2nd to Pine Bluff’s all-purpose sprinter/jumper Lakeshia Martin in the Girls LJ by only one-half inch as Martin sailed to 18’.5”. The Boys also provided plenty of close calls as Charles Lebow (Ozarks) led three runner s within .30 seconds in the Boys 400m at 49.51, Nathan Smith (Russellville) took the Boys 800m in 1:58.54 with the Top 3 scrunched inside a second and Jerome Phillips squeaked out a 100m hurdle win by only .05 and the 300m hurdles with the Top 3 with .13 seconds. Meanwhile, West Helena Central slipped by Texarkana in the Boys 4x1 in 42.68-42.70 but yielded to Fayetteville in the Boys 4x4 by less than a second as the Bulldogs won in 3:20.63. Top performances are below and complete results are available at www.ArkansasTrackStats.com.
After trailing the leader by 821 points and in a distant 6th place after Day 1, Matt Vining (Lake Hamilton) scored 700+ in four of Day 2’s events including 820 in the PV (12’ 6”) and a thrilling 5:08.24 in the 1600m for 717 points to slip past two of the state’s elite athletes, Gary Anderson, Jr. (Pulaski Robinson) and Wallace Spearmon (Fayetteville), for the win. Vining’s gutsy effort in the 1600m put him past Anderson and Spearmon as the best they could do was a 6:19+ for the four-lapper. Vining won 7224-7079-7019 over Anderson and Spearmon. Top performances of the meet were posted by Spearmon with a sterling TJ of 45’ 7”, Robinson in the 110m hurdles at a crisp 14.84 and Aaron Puckett (Lake Hamilton) in the PV at 14’ 0”. In the Hep, Amber Bledsoe of tiny Turrell took a 200+ point Day 1 lead and held on for dear life as Brittney Leftwich (Greenwood) made a serious charge on Day 2. Bledsoe scored 950 in the LF with a solid leap of 18’ 1” and posted another 1000 in the 200m at 25 flat. Courtney Brown (Sylvan Hills) sped the 200m in 24.67 for a top performance. Bledsoe took the win with 5318 points to survive Leftwich’s effort at 5009 and Whitney Anderson (Russellville) at 4915. Complete results are to be available at www.ArkansasTrackStats.com.
