Commentary.......Message from the Publishers: Footlocker Midwest
12/8/2001
Unseasonably warm weather in Kenosha,
Wisconsin for the Saturday after Thanksgiving on November 24 led to spring-like
rains to create a sloppy, muddy and slippery course for the Footlocker Midwest
CC Championships. The top eight runners in the Boys Seeded and Girls Seeded
races at the four regional meets qualified for the Footlocker Nationals run in
Orlando, Florida on December 8. With
temperatures a mild 50 degrees and the wind not a factor in the wooded course
at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, the runners faced two major
obstacles….the treacherous footing and the tough hilly course. Over 1500 high school runners competed in
five different races over the 5K course.
Arkansas was represented by a large
contingent of 32 runners led by sophomore Beth Madson of Lake Hamilton
who finished 3rd out of 139 in the Girls Freshman/Sophomore race.
Beth ran a very respectable 19:59 which is about 6:08 per mile while closing
the gap the last mile behind the first two runners who finished in a nearly
dead heat at 19:53. Another soph, Andrea
Peerson of Rogers finished 18th at 21:01 and passed three
runners in the last 200m.
The Top 5 Arkansas Girls based on
time were:
Beth Madson Lake Hamilton 19:59
Andrea Peerson Rogers 21:01
Patricia Bradbury Lake
