Week 1 action saw the Rogers Mounties and Lady
Mounties go to work on Southwest Missouri teams as they took a pair of wins
in the Carthage Invitational(9/13/03) and the Monett Invitational
(9/16/03) within a four day span. Staci
Papageorge led the Lady Mounties over Carthage
38-55 with an individual win in 20:17
for 5K. Luis Flores took 2nd in the Boys race in 16:21 to lead the Mounties to a 23-89 (52
second spread) win over Carthage.
At Monett, Papageorge took 2nd
at 21:05 to lead her team to a 38-87
win over Willard (MO) while Michael McCullough also took 2nd
in 16:53 as the Mounties won 21-81
(39 second spread) over Webb City (MO).
At the Bob Gravette Invitational (9/13/03 at Ouachita Baptist
University in Arkadelphia,
AR), the Houston (TN) Girls posted a
53-56 win over Bryant while Lake
Hamilton narrowly
defeated DeQueen by 62-69. Ashley
Williams (Mount St. Mary’s) dominated the field with a superb 14:30 (5:35
first mile) clocking for 4K as five others finished under 16 minutes.
Burt Hicks (Lake Hamilton)
took the Boys race in 16:05 (4:59-10:04 splits) over a 5K course that is
about 200m long.
The Josh Park Memorial Invitational (9/13/03 in Heber
Springs, AR) saw another Tennessee
team take the Girls Class 4A race as Bolton High tripped up Vilonia
by 23-58. Emily Bain led Bolton with 15:20 for 3800m to earn individual
honors. Bolton also took the Boys crown by
24-55 over Russellville as Eric Harris (Conway) won in 16:59.
At the Berryville Invitational (9/13/03), Fayetteville
took a pair from next door neighbor Springdale
by 48-87 (58 second spread) in the Girls race and 29-68(1:09 spread) in the Boys. Jessi
Barnes (Bentonville) won the Girls 4K in 16:14
while Alex Nimmo (Fayetteville)
posted a 16:47 for the win.
