ARKANSAS ROUND-UP by ArkansasTrackStats.com
September 22,2003
(all meets on 9/20/2003)
Rogers Boys traveled to Joplin,
Missouri for the Southern Stampede at Missouri
Southern State College and found the
competition hot and heavy. While Burt Hicks of Lake Hamilton was
grabbing an impressive 2nd place overall in the Class 3A+ Division
in 15:13.90, the Mounties placed a respectable 3rd behind Midwest
powerhouses West Plains (MO) and Lee’s Summit
(MO). West Plains won in a 45-72-91score. Michael
McCullough led the Mounties with a 7th place finish in 15:57.40
while Luis Flores was 14th in 16:11.20. Brian Gosnell (Tahlequah,OK)
took the honors in 15:09.20. In Class 2A action, Berryville placed
2nd behind Licking (MO) in 31-47 behind the 5th place
finish of Manuel Arrizon (17:23). In a dula meet scoring between Rogers
and Fayetteville, the Mounties
would have won over the Purple Dogs by 20-38.
Patricia Bradbury of Lake Hamilton posted a 9th
place finish with an outstanding 18:53.40 for 5K to lead all Arkansas
runners. Jessica Harper of West Plains, MO won the race in an excellent
clocking of 17:44.40. Other Arkansas
finishers included Jessi Barnes
(Bentonville, 33rd, 20:11.60), Beth Madson
(lake Hamilton,
36th, 20:18.50), Laura Broderdorf
(Mountain Home, 42nd, 20:23.70) , Emily
Walker (Lake Hamilton,
50th, 20:39.00) and Alicia Owensby
(Bentonville, 52nd, 20:44.50). West Plains easily won by 25-78
over Lee’s Summit. Courtney
Moore (6th, 22:10.40) led Berryville to a 2nd
place team finish in the Class 2A race behind East Newton
who won in 24-40.
At the Bryant Invitational, the home team won the
Boys race (5K) by 36-58-96 over Russellville
and Cabot in a 14 team meet. Quincy
Googe (Little Rock Fair) won in 16:58 in a close race over Bryan Ballew
(Bryant) who posted a16:59. Daniel Haney (Arkadelphia) took 3rd
at 17:12. The Bryant Lady
Hornets continued to dominate with an easy 26-83-86 win over Russellville
and Little Rock Lutheran in an 11 team meet
over 3800m. Janie Blackmon (Russellville) took top honors in 15:09 while Brooke Higgs (Bryant) and Mary
Edwards (Bryant) ran 15:25 and 15:49 for 2nd and 3rd,
respectively. Alex Barton (Sheridan,
11:31)) led his team to a 56-63 win
over Lake Hamilton
in the Junior High Boys 2 mile. Bryant
won the Junior Girls by 45-82 over Beebe as Brittany Blackmon
(Russellville) won in 7:29.
Ashley Williams (Mount St. Mary’s) took another
impressive win at the Hendrix College Orange Crush in Conway
with a swift 14:33 clocking for 4K
over the grass and pine needle trails. Leigh Ann Moore (Jonesboro)
took 2nd in 15:38. Mount
St. Mary’s beat out DeQueen and Jonesboro
by 61-66-78 in a seven team meet. Eric Harris (Conway)
won the Boys 5K in 16:12 followed by
teammate Raven Fuller in 16:32.
However, Class 3A DeQueen took the team title
by 48-59-69 over Heber Springs and Conway.
Emily Carpenter of Carlisle won the Junior
Girls 1.5 mile run in 8:44 while Batesville
won 27-76 over Heber Springs. Dusty Hardin (Warren) won the
Junior Boys 1.5 mile in 8:29
as Heber Springs won the team title by 32-45 over Batesville.
The “Race of the Day Award” goes to four boys in
the Orange Crush senior Boys race. With the wide open finish over the
last 300m at the Orange Crush course, the crowd was treated to a ferocious
stride-for-stride race as Patrick Jorgensen (Christian Brothers,
Memphis) slipped into 10th at the very last nano-second
in 17:32 to nip Denton Bowles (Atkins, 17:33), Josh Parkey (Jonesboro, 17:33) and Mitchell Holland
(Heber Springs, 17:24). This finish was a fine showing of what a cross
country finish is suppose to look like.
