September 29,2003
(all meets on 9/27/2003)
The inaugural
Kaleidoscope Cross Country Meet, which was held in Morrilton and sponsored
by Southern Christian Homes, saw nearly 150 River Valley runners finish the juniors and senior
races. Russellville Boys won the
senior race easily by 26-65-88-92 over Atkins, Dover, Pottsville and Clarksville. Ryan
Newton (Russellville) won narrowly over Denton Bowles (Atkins) in 17:46-17:50. Bethany
Vangilder (Russellville) led the Lady Cyclones with an individual
win in 22:02 for 5K
as her team posted close 36-40-48 win over Dover and Perryville. Russellville also won both junior
races.
Meanwhile at the Panther
Invitational in Siloam Springs, the Rogers Lady Mounties defended their No. 1 ranking
with a solid thumping of the eleven-team field as they won by 31-89-105 over Springdale and Berryville. Staci Papageorge (Rogers) again led the Lady Mounties win a
win in 15:02 for
4K. Teammates LeAnna Peerson (2nd, 15:27), Robin Sutherland (5th, 15:43) and Danielle Cummings (8th,
15:50) also grabbed Top 10 spots. Dianne Miller (Siloam Springs) claimed
3rd in 15:30 while Alicia Owensby (Bentonville)
was 4th in 15:39.
Others under 16:00 were Jessica Miller (Van Buren, 6th,
15:44), Erika Wardlaw (Eureka Springs, 7th,
15:50) and Melissa Arnold (Decatur, 9th, 15:55). Rogers spread was a nice 1:19, or only 56 seconds from 2nd-5th, , with
their 6th-8th also under 17 minutes.
In the Senior
Boys, Rogers waltzed to victory in a twelve-team meet by 29-52-98-105 over Springdale, Van Buren and Berryville. The Mounties
rested two of the varsity runners (and three others who ran the meet ran a nine
mile run earlier that day!) as Michael McCullough (Rogers) took top honors at 15:47 over Patrick McGowan (Springdale) at 15:58. Zach
Hines (Rogers) took 3rd in 16:01 while five other Mounties finished in the
Top 15. Rogers finished with a 58 second spread for their
Top 5.
Kimberly Peek (Eureka Springs) won the Junior Girls
1.5 mile in 8:54 over Hanna
Bryant (Bentonville) at 9:00. Bentonville
edged Rogers Elmwood in the team scoring by 33-39. Aaron Hamilton (Fayetteville Woodland)
nipped Eric Molina (Rogers Elmwood) and Justin Spradlin
(Bentonville) by 7:47-7:49-7:50 in the Junior Boys 1.5 mile. Rogers won narrowly by 67-69-78-87 over Bentonville,
Van Buren and Springdale Southwest.
The Most
Bizarre Race of the Day Award goes to the UALR Open in Little Rock
where confusion by the runners on the new course layout at Rebsamen Park
resulted in the entire race being nullified.
Eric Harris (Conway) won the Senior Boys race in 16:18 over 5K as the Wampus Cats could only
manage 2nd in the team scoring to Central Arkansas rival Bryant who won by 37-60. Little Rock Lutheran was 3rd
with 77. Emily Carpenter (Carlisle) won the Junior Girls 2450 meter race
(about 1.517 miles) in 9:04 as Batesville defeated Bryant
in a six-team meet by 27-33. In the Junior
Boys race, Alvin Rapien (Bryant) nudged out Zach Castleberry
(Conway) by 8:52-8:55 as
Little Rock Catholic won the four team meet by 28-32 over Bryant.
