ARKANSAS ROUND-UP by ArkansasTrackStats.com

October 7,2003

(all meets on 10/4/2003)

Patricia Bradbury (Lake Hamilton) continued her strong fall as she cruised to an easy win at the 29th Annual Cyclone Invitational in Russellville.  Bradbury’s 15:05 for 4K was more than good enough to lead the Lady Wolves to a smashing victory over Fayetteville by 30-75 in a ten-team meet.  Class 3A Dover took third with 101 while Class 4A Harrison was third at 125.  Janie Blackmon (Russellville) finished 2nd in an excellent 15:28 while Jaala Spencer (Conway) and Beth Madson (Lake Hamilton) also were under 16 minutes with 15:49 and 15:54, respectively.

Burt Hicks (lake Hamilton) won easily in a slow 17:19 over the difficult 5K course with Raven Fuller (Conway) in 2nd at 17:29.  Fayetteville narrowly beat out Lake Hamilton in the 13-team meet by 51-56.  Russellville followed with 91 and Conway took 4th in 101.

In Junior High action, Brittany Blackmon (Russellville) posted a victory in the Girls 2 Mile at 13:11 as Pulaski Academy won the 14-team meet in a close call by 53-56 over Batesville.  Zach Ray (Van Buren) won the Boys 2 Mile in 11:57 to lead his team to a solid 27-77 win over Bryant in the eight-team meet.

The No. 1 ranked Rogers Mounties and Lady Mounties traveled to Stillwater, OK to take on the top teams in the four state region in the always-tough Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree.  The extremely hilly 5K course played havoc with times as Liberty (MO) took the team title in 27-team Class 5A race by 32-99-158-186 over Jenks (OK), Rogers and Edmond (OK) Memorial.  Brian Gosnell (Tahlequah,OK) won with the only sub-16 time in 15:56.  Rogers took 3rd without peak performances from two of their usual Top 3.  Senior Zach Hines was the first Mounties at 20th in 16:44 as junior Luis Flores was 23rd at 16:52 and junior Stefan Mueller was close by in 25th at 16:55. The Mounties achieved an outstanding spread of only 39 seconds.  The quality of the field was evident as there were 34 finishers between the Rogers’ first (20th) and fifth (53rd).

The Class 5A Girls race over the 2-mile course saw regional powerhouse Jenks (OK) only able to garner 5th as Blue Valley Springs (KS) won by 83-97 over Liberty (MO) in the 23-team meet.  Rogers held on for 8th with a strong 17th place finish by Staci Papageorge in 12:11. The race was won by Jana Gwinn (Blue Valley Springs) in an excellent 11:06 as 12 runners were at 12 flat or better.

For the uninitiated to Stillwater, the Girls course is two laps around a large, open pasture subject to a long stretch each lap to the west that is normally quite windy. There are just enough slopes to make it interesting. The first half-mile of the Boys course is the same as the Girls but then it veers into the rough and steep terrain of the back side until the 3 mile mark before a straight shot to the finish.
