Meet records were falling at the 4A Girls meet faster than prices fall at meet
sponsor Wal-Mart! All in all, days end
saw the Girls knock down seven records…that is fully one half of the events saw
new marks set!! While Keisha Bass of
Crossett saw her existing 55m dash and 200m dash records fall, she was busy
setting new records in the LJ, HJ and 400m dash…not a bad days work. Antisha Anderson of Robinson took over the
mark in the 55m low hurdles and the 200m.
The other record breakers were Maricia Daniels of Monticello in the 55m
dash and Candice Cross of Crossett in the 800m. If you missed the 4A meet, you missed a real treat.
The
Crossett Division …after all the Lady Eagles held 11 of 14 state meet records
coming into the meet and left with ONLY 9….was effectively decided after six
events. The Lady Eagles put on a show
that every track coach would love as they scored in EVERY event. They scored 80 points in winning eight
events and added another 64 points just for a nice margin of safety. Their total points break down as: Distance = 27; Field Events = 83; and
Sprints = 34.
Monticello
actually broke on top early with a win in the 4 x 800m relay. However, the
Hillbillies were only going to gather another 26 throughout the evening and
their lead was short-lived. This was
the only time Crossett trailed because as soon as the LJ wrapped up, they
scored 17 big points on the efforts of Keisha Bass (1st and New
Record), Kellie Williams (3rd) and Patrice Sales (6th). Robinson’s Antisha Anderson scored her first
four points with a 4th place effort.
Bass
added to the lead with another New Record in the HJ breaking the old record by
an inch. Robinson scored big with 15
points from the jumps of Anderson (2nd), Jana Spillyards (tie for 3rd)
and Lindsey Nelson (5th).
The Crossett lead had been cut to 29-23.
When
the SP results came in the trend was becoming clear as Crossett took 1st
(Shonda Martin) and 2nd (Karen Hayes) while Robinson’s all-purpose
Anderson took 4th. The lead
ballooned to 20. For all practical
purposes the meet was over after the PV as the Lady Eagles scored 13 points
behind Jennifer Griffis (tie for 2nd), Mary Kate Barnet (tie for 4th)
and Sara Buck (tie for 4th).
With Robinson not scoring, the lead mounted to a commanding 60-27.
But
the Lady Eagles were just getting warmed up.
The TJ brought in another 20 points as Keisha Bass 1st while
teammates Kellie Williams grabbed 3rd and Patrice Sales took 4th. Robinson scored a notable 11 points behind
Anderson’s 2nd, Julie McDaniel’s 5th and Paige Newkirk’s
6th. No other team scored in
the TJ as the lead bulged to 80-38.
Now
the distance crew took over as Candice Cross won convincingly over Laura Insell
of Batesville in a respectable 5:38.29.
Robinson came back strong in the 55m hurdles with Anderson taking 1st
with a new meet record in smashing the old record by .28 seconds. Lindsey Nelson claimed 3rd giving
the Lady Senators a total of 16. Keisha
Bass took 2nd to grab another eight points fro Crossett.
Maricia
Daniels of Monticello took some of the glow off Crossett as she broke Bass’
record in the 55m dash by .03 with Robinson’s Anderson close behind in 2nd
and Crossett’s Crystal Simpson crossed in 3rd. Now the “piece de resistance” was applied as
the Lady Eagles took 12 points in thee 400m dash behind the record-setting win
of Bass and a 5th by Jane Jordan while Robinson came up empty. The lead was an insurmountable 116-62.
Candice
Cross ran tactical the first 400m in winning the 800m and out legged
Batesville’s Insell in 2:32.34 to 2:37.99 in setting another meet record. Crystal Newman of West Helena Central led at
the 200m in 33.62 and at the 400m in 73.51 (39.89). Cross and Insell held the pace at a 40.33 to take charge and
Cross pulled away with a 38.16 last 200m while Insell fell back and held on as
Natalie Parker of Greenwood was charging hard to finish in 2:40.12. The lead
now more than doubled Robinson to 126-62.
The
200m belonged to Robinson as Anderson knocked .78 seconds off the record held
by Keisha Bass. The much-needed 10 points firmed up Robinson’s 2nd
position and assured that Batesville would not be able to close the gap. Even
if Batesville scored the max in the final two events they could not keep
Robinson from bringing home the 2nd place hardware. However, Laura
Insell (1st) and Jenny Graham (3rd) would do their best
as they brought back 16 points in the 3200m.
Insell led the entire way and tried to set the pace for Graham the first
800m. She ran steady 49-51 second 200s
except for an opening 40 she used to get away from the pack and a closing 48 as
she glided home with a comfortable 33 second margin over Sunnie Butcher of Hot
Springs who gradually moved throughout the race from 6th to 3rd.
This
time the 4 x 400m relay was anti-climactic with Crossett running a nice 4:22.72
(unofficial splits of 63.03-69.43-67.51-62.74) for a 12 second win. The only thing at stake here was 4th
and 5th overall as West Helena Central needed to score 2 more points
than Monticello to overtake the Hillbillies.
At the end of the race, West Helena Central had done exactly what they
needed by taking 2nd for 8 points as Monticello was two seconds back
for 3rd place worth 6 points.
